Chapter & Compass Travel

The work, properly considered

Journeys with a little more story in them.

A good itinerary knows what to leave out. These are trips built around the books, records, rooms and roads you will still be thinking about when you are home.

01

Literary Itineraries

Start with the book, the writer, or the sentence that stayed with you. I build a route through rooms, streets, landscapes and libraries that gives the reading a little more room to breathe — with time to stop when a place deserves more than a photograph.

02

Heritage & Surname Research

A surname is a lead, not a ready-made story. Research can begin with parish records, townlands and ports of departure, then become an itinerary through the places that make the family history feel three-dimensional.

03

A Reader's Weekend In...

A few well-chosen days can hold a great deal: one museum you can take your time in, a hotel with a proper library, a bookshop worth crossing town for, and a table where nobody is trying to turn you around for the next sitting.

04

Off-Season & The Long Way Round

Go in February. The reading room is empty. The roads are quieter, the light is better for looking closely, and the places with a long history have time for you. I plan the slower route, including the weather plan.

05

Hotels for Book Lovers

Some hotels have a library because someone cared about the life of the room. I look for historic character, literary provenance, quiet corners and the sort of old-world detail that makes staying in feel like part of the journey.

06

Heritage & Literary Road Trips

The long way round is useful when every turn has a reason. I connect archives, country houses, civic oddities, family places and the unexpected stop that makes the route feel like yours — with a plan sturdy enough for wet weather.
